There’s something special about places that connect us to the past. Lukes Drug Mart, Calgary’s oldest independent pharmacy, has been operating in the Bridgeland neighbourhood since 1951. Read on to learn more about the history of this enduring family business, courtesy of calgary-future.
A Family Legacy
The pharmacy’s founder and first owner was Jim Lukes (1949–1985). His son, Bob Lukes, continued the legacy from 1985 until 2013. The business was then passed to Gareth Lukes. The pharmacy is located in the historic Bridgeland area, once known as a small “Little Italy.” The store, much like the neighbourhood itself, has developed and weathered the test of time.
In 1951, Jim Lukes opened the original pharmacy and soda fountain. The concept was simple and straightforward. Throughout the 1960s, parts of the building were leased out for doctors’ offices. At one point, there was even a beauty salon, but in the 1970s, the Lukes family reclaimed the space. A grocery section was added, and the retail offerings expanded. This laid the foundation for the community hub that Calgary residents still love today.

Meet Gareth Lukes
We want to highlight the recent changes, which were largely thanks to Jim Lukes’ grandson, Gareth. In one interview, he shared that he had worked full-time at Lukes Drug Mart since he was 15. He finished high school via correspondence, making the family business central to his life.
His father, Bob Lukes, was the pharmacist and owner. After handing the family business over to his son, they mutually agreed it was time for a refresh. Gareth Lukes recalled, “It was awesome.” The young and ambitious Gareth had a keen eye for modern, design-focused brands. He started with vinyl records, then began experimenting with various niche products, trends, and concepts. In Gareth Lukes’ opinion, this was exactly what his beloved neighbourhood was missing.
Where did this inspiration come from? Gareth had travelled to cities like Seattle, Portland, and New York, gaining insight into what was happening elsewhere. Naturally, he compared this to his hometown, where those elements were absent. After returning home, he had a significant list of products he wanted to feature in his store. To his pleasant surprise, the brands themselves were also eager to partner with him.
Gareth Lukes exercised his creative license and steered the business in a new direction. For instance, he collaborated with Stumptown Coffee Roasters from Oregon to create a high-end coffee bar. It stands out due to its quality ingredients and unique offerings. Other highlights include the Blueberry Yuzu Frozen Yogurt, Charcoal, Ube (purple sweet potato from the Philippines), and their signature Supermilk.
The third owner of Lukes Drug Mart continually works to create a distinctive aesthetic, constantly collaborating with both local and international companies.

Change is Inevitable
